Health Minister J. P. Nadda on 29 October inspected a new waiting hall at AIIMS New Delhi that can seat 897 people and is to be used as an "Aashray" shelter for patients and their families.
The 2,970-square-metre building at the AIIMS Trauma Centre Extension Campus was built by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Ghaziabad, under its corporate social responsibility programme.
The cleanliness review
Nadda also reviewed AIIMS's sanitation and waste management under Special Campaign 6 and spoke to sanitation workers. The ministry listed:
- 11 wastewater treatment plants, with about 19.6 lakh litres of treated water reused every day for gardens.
- Electricity use down by 7.68 lakh kWh, or 10.5%, and about ₹1.98 crore saved in January–October 2025 compared with the same period in 2024.
- 40 free electric shuttle services on campus, 30 EV chargers and 114 charging points.
For families who often wait outside the hospital for days, a covered shelter of this size is a practical change. The release does not say when the building will open.
