The Navy will get eight new warships designed by its own engineers, after the Defence Ministry signed contracts worth ₹53,866.50 crore with two public-sector shipyards for Next Generation Corvettes.

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) will build five of the corvettes and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) the other three. The contracts were signed on 2 November at Kartavya Bhawan-2 in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.

The ministry called the project "a significant milestone" in India's warship design and construction. It is the first project in which the ships are indigenously designed by the Indian Navy and built by defence public-sector undertakings chosen through a competitive process.

What the ships will do

The corvettes will carry advanced missiles, weapons and sensor suites, allowing them to operate in the air, surface and sub-surface domains. According to the ministry, they will be used to:

  • safeguard maritime trade routes;
  • conduct anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare;
  • strengthen coastal defence and littoral combat;
  • carry out maritime presence and surveillance missions.

Jobs and industry

The ministry said the project will strengthen collaboration among defence shipyards, private shipyards and Indian industrial partners, including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Construction is expected to generate about 72 lakh person-days of employment in the shipyards and 460 lakh person-days in ancillary industries and MSMEs over the next ten years.

The release says the ships will use Made-in-India materials, equipment and technologies, and calls the project a step towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

What the release does not say

It does not give delivery dates or the cost of each ship. Those details were not part of the announcement.
