The Sensex jumped 1,718.01 points, or 2.17%, to close at 81,028.02 on Friday, and the Nifty 50 rose 493.75 points, or 2.01%, to 25,030.35, back above the 25,000 mark, ETV Bharat and Kotak Neo reported. The previous closes were 79,310.01 and 24,536.60.
The rally came even though Wall Street, Japan and South Korea had sold off sharply a day earlier.
The six-day run
Over the last six sessions the Sensex has gained about 8.27% and the Nifty about 8%, ETV Bharat said. On Thursday the Sensex had risen 2,008.61 points, or 2.60%, and the Nifty 576 points, or 2.40%.
Who led, who lagged
- Among the biggest gainers on the Sensex were Mahindra & Mahindra, ICICI Bank, Titan, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank, ETV Bharat reported.
- On the Nifty, Kotak Neo named Mahindra & Mahindra, ICICI Bank, HDFC Life Insurance and HDFC Bank as the top gainers, and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Eicher Motors, Shriram Finance and Grasim Industries as the biggest losers.
- Nifty Metal rose 0.66%, Nifty Oil & Gas 0.64%, Nifty PSU Bank 0.60% and Nifty IT 0.43%, according to Kotak Neo.
- The broader market lagged: the Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 both ended lower. Kotak Neo called participation in the rally "uneven".
- The combined value of BSE-listed companies passed ₹500 lakh crore for the first time, Kotak Neo reported.
What was behind it
ETV Bharat cited steady foreign institutional buying: they bought equities worth ₹14,974.68 crore on Thursday, it said. It also pointed to moderating crude prices, and to early-session volatility that gave way to gains.
Brent crude moved back toward $100 a barrel after a sharp fall, ETV Bharat said. Kotak Neo put Brent January futures at $97.62 and said fresh attacks on oil tankers had pushed prices higher. On MCX, December gold fell 1.19% to ₹1,42,379 per 10 grams and silver fell 1.05% to ₹1,85,177 a kg, Kotak Neo added.
The global backdrop
Wall Street fell sharply on Thursday: ETV Bharat gave the Dow's fall as 3.4%, the S&P 500's as 4.36% and the Nasdaq's as 5.52%. Japan's Nikkei dropped 5.96% and South Korea's Kospi 6.02%. An analyst at Religare Broking linked the global tech sell-off to concerns over AI-related investments, ETV Bharat said. Indian IT stocks held up relatively well.

How we verified this
VerifiedThe closing levels, the point and percentage gains and the previous closes (Sensex 79,310.01; Nifty 24,536.60) are the same in ETV Bharat and Kotak Neo. The two give slightly different figures for the mid- and small-cap indices (Midcap 100 down 0.54% in ETV Bharat and 0.02% in Kotak Neo; Smallcap 100 down 0.87% and 0.82%), so the story says only that both ended lower. ETV Bharat calls the run six sessions in its data but quotes an analyst saying seven; the story uses six. The foreign investor purchase figure, the global sell-off numbers and the analyst remark are from ETV Bharat alone and are attributed. Index levels are from exchange data as reported; BDT did not read NSE or BSE directly.
