Amul has raised the retail prices of its ghee and butter across India days before Diwali, IANS reported from Ahmedabad on Thursday. The revised prices are in effect immediately.
The new prices
| Product | Old price | New price | Rise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ghee, 1-kg carton | ₹630 | ₹680 | ₹50 |
| Pure ghee pouch, 500 gm | ₹325 | ₹345 | ₹20 |
| Butter, 500 gm | ₹310 | ₹325 | ₹15 |
| Butter, 100 gm | ₹63 | ₹66 | ₹3 |
The 1-kg ghee carton is therefore about 8% dearer, and the 500-gm butter pack about 5% dearer, going by the old and new prices above.
Why now
The IANS report did not carry a reason from Amul or the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets Amul, for this particular increase. It noted only that the rise comes during the festive season. Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November.
Earlier this year, GCMMF raised Amul fresh milk prices by ₹2 a litre from 14 May, citing higher costs of cattle feed, packaging and fuel and a higher procurement price paid to dairy farmers by member unions, the same report said. That reason relates to milk, not to this ghee and butter revision.
What shoppers should check
These are retail list prices. Shops may sell older stock at the earlier price for a while, and prices can differ slightly by city and pack type. Amul's other products, such as milk and cheese, are not mentioned in the report as changing.
BDT will update this story if Amul or GCMMF explains the increase.
How we verified this
VerifiedThe old and new prices come from the IANS report in Telangana Today, which BDT read in full. Oneindia, NewsBytes and other outlets carry the same figures in their search summaries; BDT could not open the NewsBytes page. The IANS report gives no reason for this increase, so none is given here. The May milk-price rise is attributed to GCMMF in the same report. Prices are retail list prices and may vary by city.
