Coal output from India's captive and commercial mines jumped about 42% in October from a year earlier, the Ministry of Coal said.
Production stood at 22.03 million tonnes in October 2026, up from 15.49 million tonnes in October 2025. Dispatches rose about 36%, from 15.48 to 21.11 million tonnes.
Seven-month picture
Over April to October, production rose 11.30%, from 105.33 to 117.23 million tonnes. Dispatches rose 11.53%, from 111.95 to 124.86 million tonnes.
A new mine
The Lohari coal mine in Jharkhand received Mine Opening Permission in October. The ministry said it had waited several years to become operational and described the approval as a result of its ease-of-doing-business reforms. The number of operational captive and commercial mines is now 87.
Why it matters
The ministry said rising output is expected to reduce dependence on imported coal, build supply-chain resilience and conserve foreign exchange. It said it will keep working to sustain production growth and address supply constraints.
