Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), a Coal India subsidiary, was the only Coal India arm to beat its targets on production, offtake and overburden removal between April and October, the Ministry of Coal said.

WCL reached 102.47% of its production target, 108.82% of its offtake target and 104.56% of its overburden removal target. Its extra output of 4.53 million tonnes was higher than Coal India's entire net production growth over the period, the release says.

October and April–October

In October, WCL produced 5.93 million tonnes against 3.60 million a year earlier, a rise of 64.87% and the highest among major Coal India subsidiaries. Offtake rose 50.16% to 6.67 million tonnes.

For April to October:

  • Production: 32.96 million tonnes, up 15.92%.
  • Offtake: 41.56 million tonnes, up 25.54%.
  • Overburden removal: 207.95 million cubic metres, up 36.10%.

Stocks and rakes

Pithead coal stock fell from 13.034 million tonnes on 1 April to 4.44 million tonnes on 31 October, a reduction of about 8.6 million tonnes, or roughly 66%. WCL loaded 6,146 rakes up to 31 October, against 4,402 a year earlier, a rise of 39.6%. Rake loading to the power sector rose 40.8%.

The ministry credits daily reviews, mine-level monitoring and coordination with Railways and state governments. It estimates the extra rakes sent to MAHAGENCO supported about 5,800 million units of additional power generation in Maharashtra.

Profit and quality

WCL's profit before tax for April–September was ₹1,352.26 crore, up 76.3%. About 86% of sampled coal from April to October was confirmed at its declared grade.
