The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed its 22nd chargesheet in the homebuyers fraud cases it is probing on the Supreme Court's directions, this time against a Greater Noida builder and its promoter-director.

The chargesheet names Geotech Promoters Pvt. Ltd. and its promoter and director. It relates to the housing project "Geotech Blessings" at Plot No. GH-16A, Sector 1, Greater Noida (West), Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh.

What the CBI alleges

The CBI says its investigation found that the builder company and its promoter-director allegedly induced homebuyers through false assurances and fraudulent representation, and obtained financial benefits by illegal and deceptive means. It says it found "substantial evidence".

The chargesheet has been filed before the competent court under Indian Penal Code provisions on criminal conspiracy, cheating and criminal breach of trust. These are allegations; the accused are presumed innocent until a court decides otherwise.

The bigger picture

  • 22 chargesheets: the CBI says it has now filed 22, including 21 filed earlier against other builders, and also against officials of certain banks and financial institutions.
  • 30 cases still open: the agency is investigating 30 other cases registered on the directions of the Supreme Court against various builder companies and unknown officials of financial institutions, involving alleged cheating and diversion of funds from homebuyers.

The CBI said it is committed to ensuring accountability in cases of economic offences, corruption and public fraud, "particularly matters adversely impacting the interests of common citizens and homebuyers".

The release does not say how many buyers were affected in the Geotech Blessings project or how much money is involved
