The Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the International Arbitration and Mediation Centre (IAMC) in Hyderabad to build training and research in arbitration and mediation.

IICA is an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. IAMC is an autonomous institution set up with the support of the Telangana government and the High Court of Telangana. The agreement was signed by Col. Amandeep Singh Puri, IICA's Chief Administrative Officer, and AJ Jawad, IAMC's CEO and Registrar.

What the two sides plan

Gyaneshwar Kumar Singh, IICA's Director-General and CEO, said the partnership should create "a specialized pool of arbitrators, mediators and dispute resolution professionals" through short- and long-term courses, workshops, seminars and skill programmes.

He stressed mediation for the micro, small and medium enterprise sector, citing its links to economic growth, GDP and exports. He also said regional support to Haryana's goal of a trillion-dollar economy by 2047 would depend on investor confidence backed by strong arbitration and mediation institutions.

Jawad said IAMC would work with IICA on structured programmes, joint initiatives and policy-oriented research to strengthen India's alternative dispute resolution (ADR) system.

What happens next

The release does not give a timeline, a budget or names of the first courses. The MoU was organised by IICA's Centre of Excellence in Alternative Dispute Resolution, headed by Prof. Naveen Sirohi.
