Five states, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh, accounted for more than 54% of India's total manufacturing gross value added (GVA) in 2024-25, according to the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) published by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).

The ministry has released Volume I and the Summary Results of the Factory Sector for ASI 2024-25, along with unit-level data and metadata. It earlier put out a factsheet on 30 September 2026.

Key findings

  • The gross value of plant and machinery in registered manufacturing grew 7.25% over the previous year.
  • The manufacturing corporate sector, which has more than 89% of total GVA, reported growth of 3.45% in the number of factories in operation and 7.57% in persons engaged.
  • Food products, textiles, basic metals, motor vehicles and wearing apparel together provided more than 41% of manufacturing employment.

Small factories, big factories

By investment, factories with up to ₹5 crore in plant and machinery are 78.69% of operating factories and engage 34.32% of workers, but hold 10.55% of fixed capital and contribute 17.61% of net value added.

Factories with ₹10 crore or more in plant and machinery are 15.84% of the total. They hold 87.42% of fixed capital, employ 59.66% of persons engaged and generate 78.07% of net value added.

By output, 18.34% of factories produce up to ₹1 crore and contribute 0.08% of total output. The 47.63% producing over ₹10 crore account for 98.10% of output and 97.87% of net value added.

Volume I gives results by industry code for India and for states and UTs. The tables are on the MoSPI website.
