India has been elected President of the International Solar Alliance for a third consecutive term, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo in New Delhi.
At a press conference, Joshi said the Alliance, set up by India and France in 2015, now has 130 signatory and member countries and is a platform for the Global South. He said the summit's discussions would move "from solar commitments to investments, from partnerships to projects, and from ambition to impact". The summit runs from 2 to 5 November.
Africa and islands
Joshi cited India's commitment of around ₹225 crore ($25 million) for distributed renewable energy in Africa, and the $300 million Nigeria Distributed Renewable Energy Fund as a model. ISA-backed projects in Fiji, Madagascar, Comoros and Seychelles are powering health facilities, schools, drinking water and cold storage, and aggregated solar-and-storage work is starting with Mauritius.
Farmers and capacity
He highlighted solar-powered farming for 3 million farmers and expansion into Agri-PV, with PM-KUSUM as the model. India has set up 17 Solar Technology Application Resource Centres, the SHINE global capability centre and an AI-enabled ISA Academy.
