India won 114 medals at the Asian Para Games 2026, up from 14 at the 2010 edition, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called the jump proof of the "immense potential and talent" of the country's athletes.
In a post on X on Thursday, Modi listed the haul: 30 gold medals, five world records, nine Asian records, and four events in which Indian athletes swept the entire podium.
The numbers he picked out
Modi said two data points were his favourites. Of the 61 athletes making their Asian Para Games debut, 36 came home with medals. And 34 of the 56 women athletes in the contingent won medals.
What he said
"Our athletes have shown that no dream is too big and no challenge too great when there is determination," the Prime Minister wrote. He added that "those days are long over when society frowned upon youngsters who wanted to pursue sports", and that if a young person has the talent, "India will support you and cheer for you."
The post came on the day Modi met the contingent in New Delhi. That interaction is reported separately.
