The Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) marked its 77th Foundation Day on 6 November 2026 at its headquarters in Gwalior, saying its enforcement cells have booked more than 1,000 cases and arrested 1,325 people since 2022.

Staff and officers attended the programme, where the bureau unveiled its Hindi magazine "Sanyam 2.0". The Deputy Narcotics Commissioner described CBN as the oldest drug law enforcement agency in the country. It sits under the Department of Revenue, regulates licit opium poppy cultivation, oversees the import and export of narcotic drugs and precursor chemicals, and runs intelligence-led operations under the NDPS Act, 1985.

History

The bureau was set up on 6 November 1950 by unifying the opium administrations. Its headquarters moved from Shimla to Gwalior in 1960.

Figures the bureau cites

  • Cases and arrests: from 2022 to October 2026, its Preventive and Intelligence cells booked over 1,000 cases and arrested 1,325 people.
  • Largest seizure: in July 2026 in Delhi, CBN seized 12 crore Tramadol Hydrochloride tablets (250 mg), weighing about 100 metric tonnes.
  • Disposal: it destroyed 342 metric tonnes of seized narcotics and controlled substances, and sent 2,535 kg of raw opium to the Government Opium and Alkaloid Works in Neemuch to be reclaimed as medicinal alkaloids.
  • Crop destruction: from 2022 to October 2026 it destroyed more than 1,11,300 acres of illicit opium and cannabis cultivation in states including Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Uttarakhand.

These figures come from the bureau's own release.
