NITI Aayog and Germany's GIZ signed an Implementation Agreement on 3 November to speed up the decarbonisation of India's road freight.
The agreement falls under the Nationally Determined Contribution–Transport Initiative for Asia Phase II (NDC-TIA II), a regional initiative backed by the German government's International Climate Initiative. WRI India, ICCT India and Agora Energiewende are among its implementing partners.
NITI Aayog says electrification of medium and heavy goods vehicles is at an early stage and needs charging infrastructure, new financing methods and an enabling regulatory framework. The agreement formalises collaboration among the partners. The release gives no funding figure or timeline.
Background
The German government's International Climate Initiative supports the regional programme. Under the agreement, NITI Aayog and GIZ will work with partners including World Resources Institute India, the International Council on Clean Transportation India and Agora Energiewende. The release says the initiative will contribute to India's Nationally Determined Contribution targets and its long-term climate goals.
