Over half of BSNL calls tested around Adoni scored poorly on speech quality: TRAI

More than half of the BSNL calls tested around Adoni and Mantralayam in Andhra Pradesh's Kurnool district had poor speech quality, a September drive test by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has found.

Out of the calls established on the route, 1,022 of 1,993 BSNL calls scored below 3 on the Mean Opinion Score, a measure of how clear a call sounds. The figure was 83 of 2,431 for Airtel, 157 of 2,630 for Reliance Jio (RJIL) and 150 of 2,564 for Vodafone Idea (VIL).

How the test was done

TRAI's appointed agency, supervised by its Hyderabad regional office, drove 63 km in Hyderabad with two hotspots and a 21.5 km walk test on 15–16 September, and 201.8 km around Adoni–Mantralayam with six hotspots on 17–18 September. The release lists both under the Andhra Pradesh licensed service area.

• Dropped calls: Airtel 0 of 331, Jio 0 of 330, Vodafone Idea 6 of 310, BSNL 15 of 317.
• Weak-signal samples: Jio 633 of 36,991, Airtel 1,323 of 37,685, Vodafone Idea 4,155 of 37,273, BSNL 8,339 of 35,351.

Hyderabad and nearby areas

• Download speed: Jio 145.79 Mbps, Airtel 82.88 Mbps, Vodafone Idea 41.41 Mbps, BSNL 7.13 Mbps (3G).
• Dropped calls: Airtel 0 of 74, Vodafone Idea 0 of 71, Jio 1 of 74, BSNL 4 of 72.
• Poor speech quality: BSNL 201 of 326 calls, Jio 66 of 453, Vodafone Idea 44 of 460, Airtel 19 of 441.

Test points included Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, AIG Hospital in Gachibowli, Mantralayam bus stand and railway station, and the Sri Raghavendra Swamy Matha.

What happens next

TRAI says the results reflect performance on the tested routes at the time of testing. The findings have been shared with the operators for "further necessary action", and detailed reports are on the TRAI website.
