The four-day Bharat Renewable Energy Summit ended in New Delhi on Thursday, drawing over 75,000 visitors and delegates from 135 countries, and the government says investors showed strong confidence in India's clean energy plans.
Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi briefed the media at the close. The summit, held from 2 to 5 November at Bharat Mandapam, was inaugurated by the Prime Minister on 2 November, and was the first time three major renewable energy events were held together.
By the numbers
More than 400 exhibitors, over 627 speakers, 113 sessions and about 800 delegates took part, including 32 international ministers, six chief ministers and ten state energy ministers.
Money
To reach the national target of 500 GW of non-fossil capacity, India needs investment of about $220 billion, the ministry said. It said discussions showed capital is not a constraint, with pension funds and institutional investors expressing interest. Participants stressed bankable power purchase agreements, predictable offtake, clearer risk allocation, deeper bond markets, and instruments such as InvITs and blended finance.
Context
The Prime Minister said India's investment in renewables has largely shielded it from disruptions from the Covid-19 pandemic and the West Asia crisis. The ministry said more than a quarter of India's electricity consumption last financial year came from renewable sources.
