Union Home Minister Amit Shah on 1 November inaugurated projects and laid foundation stones for others worth ₹258 crore for the Chandigarh Administration, covering education, healthcare, justice, administration, research and innovation.
The event took place on the 60th anniversary of Chandigarh's creation as a Union Territory. Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria was present, the Ministry of Home Affairs said.
The projects
Two were singled out by name: a City-UT Bus Depot built at a cost of ₹68 crore, and Type-3 residential quarters for police personnel, also built at ₹68 crore. Shah said he expected Chandigarh Police to rank first in the country for residential satisfaction among its personnel before 2029.
He said Chandigarh has earned recognition for its urban planning and has become an integral part of North India's identity over 60 years.
Political remarks
In his speech, Shah criticised the Opposition, saying it has been losing elections for 15 years and has found a "new way in the form of a mock Parliament". He said that if its approach of disrupting Parliament continued, it would again sit in Opposition for five years. He also said opposition leaders were disrupting Parliament to prevent 33% reservation for women. The release carries no response from the Opposition; these are the minister's statements.
Other claims in the speech
Shah said Article 370 has been abrogated, Naxalism eliminated and Triple Talaq abolished. He said the whole country, including Punjab, will be drug-free by 31 December 2029, and that infrastructure projects worth ₹11 lakh crore are under way. These figures are as stated by the minister in the release.
