A trial consignment of 1.5 tonnes of kiwi from Ziro in Arunachal Pradesh has reached Dubai and is on sale at a LuLu Hypermarket in Al Qusais, after a flag-off facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).
The effort, under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region and branded "Kiwi: USP of Arunachal Pradesh", is meant to test how the fruit sells abroad. It was carried out with the state's trade and commerce and horticulture departments.
What it is meant to show
APEDA says consumer tasting and feedback will show how acceptable the fruit is and what buyers expect on quality, packaging and presentation. The findings could help growers, cooperatives and exporters prepare for commercial shipments and find buyers.
The release says the main varieties grown in the region are Hayward, Monty, Allison and Bruno, and that Hayward has good demand in international markets. It gives no price or sales figures for the trial.
The flag-off was attended by Arunachal Pradesh's Agriculture Minister Gabriel D. Wangsu and representatives of the Kiwi Growers Cooperative Society and Fair Exports India Pvt. Ltd.
