Sacred relics of the Buddha from Piprahwa in Uttar Pradesh arrived at Tawang Monastery in Arunachal Pradesh on 31 October, opening a three-town exposition of India's Buddhist heritage.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu received the relics, which come from the National Museum in New Delhi, in the presence of Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, monks and devotees. Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a message calling it an occasion of "immense spiritual and cultural significance" and recalling the return of the Piprahwa relics to India after more than a century.
Schedule
- Tawang Monastery: 1 to 7 November
- TGL Monastery (Lower Gompa), Bomdila: 8 to 13 November
- Golden Pagoda, Namsai: 14 to 20 November
The relics are due back at the National Museum on 21 November.
Exhibition and conference
The exposition coincides with Lhabab Duchen, which marks the Buddha's descent from the heavenly realm in Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Piprahwa is an archaeological site linked to ancient Kapilavastu.
An accompanying exhibition, Unearthing the Sacred Piprahwa, traces the discovery of the relics and their repatriation. The International Buddhist Confederation will also hold a conference, "Buddhism: Dissemination in the Himalayan Region and Beyond", at Tawang on 2 November.
The Culture Ministry is organising the event with the Arunachal government, the Confederation and the National Museum.
