India has the science to map coastal risks, but those maps must now shape real planning and investment, Environment Secretary Narendra Bhooshan said on 29 October at the start of a two-day national workshop on coastal resilience in New Delhi.

The workshop, "Enhancing Coastal Resilience through Adaptive Strategies", runs on 29 and 30 October. It is part of a Green Climate Fund project to make coastal communities more resilient, which restores mangroves, seagrass, salt marshes, coral and coastal watersheds while supporting local livelihoods.

Bhooshan said India has strengthened shoreline-change assessments, hazard-line mapping and vulnerability studies. "The next task," he said, is to move this evidence from reports into planning at state, district and local levels. He said the National Coastal Mission would build on the project's results.

Progress in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Odisha was presented. Officials also showcased the project's "ECRICC Didi" model, in which women from coastal communities explain climate action to their neighbours, as one that could be copied elsewhere. UNDP India's Resident Representative Angela Lusigi spoke about how restoring coastal ecosystems can support women's enterprises.
