The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the Kolkata Police Commissioner for a detailed report within two weeks on a media report that police paraded three arrested men half-naked through a locality.
The Commission took suo motu cognizance of the report, carried on 28 October 2026. It said the contents, "if true", raise serious issues of human rights violation.
What the report described
According to the media report cited by the NHRC:
- A day earlier, an 18-year-old and his 19-year-old friend, who were reportedly seen with a minor girl, were beaten and humiliated by the girl's family at her house. The 18-year-old's father, summoned by the family, was also assaulted.
- All three were then stripped and forced to walk naked on the road at gunpoint.
- Police later brought three people arrested in the case, including the girl's father, her maternal uncle and his friend, to the same locality and made them walk shirtless and barefoot for more than 100 metres, reportedly to reconstruct the crime scene.
What happens next
The Kolkata Police Commissioner must send the report within two weeks. These are allegations from a media report; the NHRC has not made any finding.
