Indian travellers with e-passports can now try Digi Yatra on international flights, as the Ministry of Civil Aviation began trials at seven airports that will run through November and December 2026.

The trials cover Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin, Mumbai, Chennai and Amritsar airports, and select international flights operated by Air India and IndiGo. Eligible Indian nationals holding e-passports can use Digi Yatra at terminal entry points, Security Hold Areas and boarding gates, wherever the infrastructure is available.

How to sign up

Passengers must create an e-passport-based Verifiable Credential on the Digi Yatra mobile app. The app scans the machine-readable zone of the e-passport, reads its embedded chip through the phone's NFC feature, captures a selfie and verifies the details. The credential is stored in the passenger's Digi Yatra wallet.

What does not change

The ministry said the facility is meant to complement, not replace, existing processes. Passengers must still carry travel documents and complete airline document checks, immigration procedures and other formalities.

Scale and next steps

Feedback from the trials will inform planning for a wider rollout in 2027. The ministry said Digi Yatra has over 26.5 million users and has enabled more than 110 million journeys across 39 domestic airports. A further 25 domestic airports are planned to be covered by 2027.
