Products made by people with disabilities trained at government career centres were showcased and sold at a Diwali Mela organised by the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
The fair brought together work by trainees and alumni of the National Career Service Centres for Differently Abled (NCSC-DAs) in Delhi, Thiruvananthapuram, Dehradun, Bhubaneswar, Kolkata and Mumbai. On display were jute and cloth bags, candles, electronic items, paintings, soaps, crochet, embroidery, woodwork and festive decorations.
Labour Secretary Chandra Bhushan Kumar said the Mela showed that with the right training and opportunities, people with disabilities can succeed as artisans and entrepreneurs.
There are 24 NCSC-DA centres in the country. They offer career counselling, vocational training in trades such as tailoring, woodwork, computers and electronics, and help with placement.
The ministry plans to grow the Mela into a larger national event, with products from more centres in future editions. The release does not give the dates or venue of this year's fair.
