Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan have agreed on how to pay off decades-old dues over the cost of building the Sardar Sarovar dam, with payments to be completed in 2026-27.

The Review Committee for the Narmada Control Authority met by video conference on 27 October under Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil, with Chief Ministers Bhupendra Patel, Devendra Fadnavis, Mohan Yadav and Bhajan Lal Sharma.

What was decided

The committee adopted the opinion of the Attorney General for India and a Memorandum of Agreement signed by the four states on 7 July 2026 in New Delhi, as a one-time settlement of all pending inter-state dues, claims and liabilities. It also approved how the outstanding dues of the Narmada Water Disputes Tribunal award projects will be paid within this financial year.

Why it matters

The ministry says the agreement ends long-running disputes among the four states over sharing the cost of the Sardar Sarovar Project.

Patil thanked the chief ministers and officials. The release does not say how much money is owed or which state pays whom.
