The Ganga Flood Control Board has discussed a revised mandate and restructuring of the Ganga Flood Control Commission (GFCC) at its 19th meeting in New Delhi, chaired by Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil.

The meeting was held on 27 October at Bharat Mandapam. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Uttar Pradesh Jal Shakti Minister Swatantra Dev Singh were among those present, along with officials from the Ganga basin states.

What was discussed

The board was set up on 18 April 1972 to coordinate measures against flood, erosion and drainage problems in the Ganga basin. The restructuring of the GFCC includes stronger basin-level flood management planning, appraisal of flood schemes, studies of river morphology and sedimentation, and a Flood Management Information System. The release says the changes are expected to improve coordination, technical appraisal and timely decisions.

The board also discussed:

  • risk-based basin Master Plans;
  • whether waterways and ventways under bridges are adequate;
  • better Detailed Project Reports and timely implementation of flood projects;
  • use of modern technology and survey techniques.

An app for groundwater

Patil launched the Punah Bharan mobile app, developed by BISAG-N with the National Water Mission, to help scientifically identify sites for artificial groundwater recharge.

The release does not give project costs or deadlines.
