An eight-day craft fair in Guwahati, where 75 artisans sold their work directly to buyers, has ended, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment said on 29 October.
The Shilp Samagam Mela at Farm Gate, Khanapara, was the second in this year's series after Mysuru, which ended on 19 October. It is meant for artisans from Scheduled Castes, Other Backward Classes, Safai Mitras and Denotified Tribes.
Thirty-one of the 75 artisans were women. Visitors could choose from about 40 kinds of handloom and handicraft products, including Assamese Mekhela Chadar, cane and bamboo work, block-printed fabric, embroidery and leather goods.
Ministry Secretary Sudhansh Pant visited the stalls with Prabhat Tyagi, head of the National Scheduled Castes Finance and Development Corporation, and spoke to artisans about their work and markets.
The fair also promoted BHARAT-TULIP, a ministry programme that helps traditional artisans sell through shops and e-commerce platforms. The ministry said direct contact with customers gave artisans feedback and new business contacts. It did not give a sales figure.
