Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy has asked state governments to speed up coal gasification, critical mineral development and the use of artificial intelligence in mining.
Reddy was speaking at the 4th Conference of Mining Ministers on Reforms in the Mines and Coal Sector in Goa on Thursday.
What he asked of the states
- Coal gasification: accelerate it to make better use of India's coal resources, create jobs and strengthen energy security.
- Critical minerals: build domestic exploration, mining, processing, refining and recycling capability to cut import dependence.
- Technology: use AI, digitalisation and advanced tools in exploration, mine operations and mineral recovery.
- Auctions: operationalise auctioned mines faster, auction new blocks sooner and expand exploration.
Why it matters
Reddy said reforms have improved transparency and efficiency in both sectors, drawn investment, created jobs and raised revenue for states, including in mining-affected regions. He called for closer coordination between the Centre and the states, in what he described as cooperative federalism, and tied the effort to the goal of a developed India by 2047.
