The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought reports from Uttar Pradesh authorities after a media report that a 12-year-old boy died when he touched an 11 kV power line near his school roof in Ballia district.

The boy, a fourth-standard student at a government primary school, died on 2 November 2026, according to the report the Commission cited. Teachers had reportedly asked him to climb onto the kitchen roof to pluck a bottle gourd for the mid-day meal.

What the Commission did

The NHRC took suo motu cognizance and said the report, if true, raises serious human rights concerns. It issued notices to the Chairman and Managing Director of Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd., the Ballia District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police, seeking detailed reports within two weeks.

The media report says two teachers have been suspended and termination has been recommended for the Shiksha Mitra. The release records these as reported actions; it states no finding.
