The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that minor girls are being sold by their parents to middlemen for ₹3 lakh to ₹5 lakh in border districts of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

The report, carried on 30 October 2026 and quoting four cases, says the girls are then trafficked using false documents showing them as adopted children, and are later sold in Maharashtra for the sex trade for ₹35 lakh to ₹40 lakh. These are the allegations in the report; the Commission has not confirmed them.

What the Commission has done

The Commission said that if the contents are true, they raise serious issues of violation of the human rights of the girls. It issued notices to the Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra, asking for detailed reports within two weeks.

The release does not name any accused person or district, and it does not carry responses from the state governments.
