A 28-year-old Ph.D. student in electronic and electrical engineering is studying abroad with help from the National Overseas Scholarship, according to a case study from the Social Justice Ministry. The name in the story has been changed to Aarav Kumar.
He wanted to do doctoral research abroad but faced costs for tuition, accommodation, living expenses and travel.
The scholarship
Under the National Overseas Scholarship scheme, run by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, he received assistance for tuition fees, maintenance and living expenses, travel and other eligible academic costs, under the scheme's rules. The assistance was sanctioned on 1 October 2024.
According to the ministry, the money let him concentrate on research, use advanced facilities and gain international exposure. He hopes to contribute to research and bring recognition to India.
The ministry offers the case as an illustration for Scheduled Caste students. It gives no figures on how many students receive the scholarship or what it pays in total.
