Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of Pune Metro projects worth around ₹21,800 crore on Tuesday, joining the ceremony by video conference.

He inaugurated the Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar corridor, which connects one of Pune's major IT hubs to the city centre, and began work on a new line that will link the old and new parts of the city. Modi said he had laid the foundation stone for the first phase of the Pune Metro ten years ago.

The Prime Minister said the corridor was built on a public-private partnership model, through the combined effort of the government and the private sector. "This is such a model of development whose success gives further momentum to the progress of the country," he said, as quoted in the release.

The national picture

Modi said India's metro network has grown from 248 km in 2014 to nearly 1,200 km, and from five cities to 26. More than one crore people now travel by metro every day, and he said the network is counted among the top three in the world.

In Maharashtra, he said, about 10–11 km of metro lines were operating in 2014 and nearly 175 km are in service now. Work is under way on more than 680 km of corridors, with investment of more than ₹2.5 lakh crore.

Cities as growth hubs

Modi said hundreds of smaller towns must become growth hubs. He pointed to the Urban Challenge Fund, approved in February this year with central assistance of ₹1 lakh crore, which aims to draw lakhs of crores of rupees of investment into cities. He urged local bodies and private companies to join "in mission mode".

Farmers in Maharashtra

The Prime Minister also spoke about farm families in Maharashtra facing difficulties because of adverse weather. He said he was aware of the drought conditions, that the state government had already provided advance assistance, and that he had transferred PM-Kisan funds. "Do not worry at all, we are all with the farmers," he said.

The release does not give a date for the opening of the Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar corridor to passengers or a breakdown of the ₹21,800 crore between inaugurated and new works.
