Armed Forces doctors treated more than 4,000 patients and performed 365 eye surgeries, all free of cost, at a three-day medical camp in Rairangpur in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district, the Defence Ministry said.

The Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) ran the 12th edition of Operation DRISHTI between 2 and 4 November. The camp brought ophthalmology, cardiology, nephrology, dermatology, dental and general medicine specialists under one roof, and referred patients for advanced care where needed.

The numbers

  • Cardiology: over 400 patients, 298 ECGs and 406 echocardiograms. Of these, 29 patients were found to need advanced procedures such as angiography, CT angiography, valve surgery, device implantation or balloon pulmonary valvotomy.
  • Nephrology: over 400 patients and 341 ultrasound examinations.
  • Dermatology: over 500 patients.
  • Dental: 221 patients and 198 procedures.
  • General medicine: 339 patients.

Patients and the visit

On 4 November, Air Marshal Sandeep Thareja, Director General of the Armed Forces Medical Services, visited the camp, spoke to patients and gave medicine kits to those who had had eye surgery. The ministry said medical teams kept working despite bad weather caused by a cyclone.

Two patients were named: Biswanath, 75, who had a complicated cataract after an old eye injury, and Sombari Gope, 60, who had a dense cataract in a structurally small eye. Both had cataract surgery.

The ministry noted that Mayurbhanj is the home district of President Droupadi Murmu, and described Operation DRISHTI as an AFMS initiative to bring specialised eye care and other medical services to underserved regions.
