The Ministry of Culture has signed a memorandum of understanding with Google Arts & Culture to digitise India's cultural heritage and make it available online in Indian languages and on any device.
The MoU was signed at a virtual ceremony on Thursday in the presence of Culture Secretary Vivek Aggarwal and Amit Sood, Vice President and Founder of Google Arts & Culture.
What will be covered
The partnership spans monuments and archaeological sites protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and the collections they hold, the holdings of national museums, manuscript heritage being documented under Gyan Bharatam, and crafts, performing arts and living traditions supported by the ministry's institutions.
A centrepiece is the Yuge Yugeen Bharat Museum, being built in the North and South Blocks in New Delhi as a museum of India's history. Its digitisation will create a record of the buildings and the artefacts they will house.
What officials said
Aggarwal called India's heritage "a living inheritance" and said the partnership would help document, preserve and share it. Google Arts & Culture has worked with the Archaeological Survey of India, the National Museum and the National Gallery of Modern Art for years, the ministry noted.
The release does not give a timeline, budget or the first collections to go online.
