Indian stealth frigate INS Sahyadri reaches Japan for four-nation Malabar 2026 exercise
The navies of India, Japan, the US and Australia will take part, with harbour and sea phases.

INS Sahyadri, an indigenously built guided-missile stealth frigate, has reached Yokosuka naval base in Japan to take part in the multilateral naval exercise Malabar 2026.
The Eastern Fleet ship arrived on 4 November and was welcomed by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. Vice Admiral Yagi Koji, Commandant of Yokosuka District, and R. Madhu Sudan, Deputy Chief of the Indian Mission, attended the ceremony.
The exercise
Malabar 2026 brings together the navies of India, Japan, the United States and Australia. The Navy says it is meant to improve operational coordination and interoperability and to exchange professional expertise.
It begins with a harbour phase of professional interactions and coordinated planning. A sea phase follows, involving INS Sahyadri and units of the US, Australian and Japanese navies.
The Navy said the ship's participation reflects its commitment to partnerships with like-minded navies, in line with its MAHASAGAR vision (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions). The release does not list the other ships taking part or give dates for the sea phase.
