India's Metro network has grown from 248 km in five cities in 2014 to nearly 1,200 km across 26 cities today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday.
In a post on X, Modi said more than one crore people now travel by Metro every day. He framed the expansion in terms of daily life: "less time in traffic, more family time, greater productivity and better opportunities."
The comparison
The Prime Minister asked how long cities such as Pune would have waited for a metro had the network kept growing at its pre-2014 pace. "Years… no… decades perhaps," he wrote, adding that such a wait was "unacceptable". The release does not give any projection behind that remark; it is the Prime Minister's own assessment.
The figures
- 2014: 248 km of Metro lines in 5 cities
- Today: nearly 1,200 km in 26 cities
- Daily riders: over 1 crore
Modi described this as "the transformation we are working towards for urban India". The release does not mention any new project or announcement.
