Pune is set to get a metro line run entirely by women train operators, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates Line 3 and lays the foundation stone for the next phase of the network on 3 November.
Projects worth around ₹21,800 crore are involved. Modi will take part at 12:30 pm by video conferencing and will address the gathering.
The Pink Line
Line 3, also called the Pink Line, cost over ₹8,300 crore and runs about 23 kilometres from Maan to District Court Metro station. It links the Hinjewadi IT hub with Shivajinagar and joins the existing metro network.
The release says the line will be operated entirely by women train operators, "a first-of-its-kind initiative", and that around 30% of its electricity needs are planned to come from solar power. It is expected to ease traffic and reduce dependence on private vehicles for commuters, including thousands of IT professionals.
Phase II
The foundation stone will be laid for Phase II, estimated at around ₹13,500 crore. It has four parts:
- Lines 2A and 2B: about 12.75 km in all. Line 2A connects Vanaz to Chandani Chowk; Line 2B connects Ramwadi to Vitthalwadi.
- Line 4: about 25.52 km from Kharadi to Khadakwasla.
- Line 4A: 6.12 km from Nal Stop to Manik Baug.
The corridors will pass through Kharadi, Magarpatta, Hadapsar, Swargate, Manik Baug, Nanded City, Pune Cantonment and Warje. Interchanges at Swargate, Nal Stop and Kharadi Bypass will link them with intercity bus services and the existing metro.
What happens next
The release does not give completion dates for Phase II.
